Sunnybrook will be participating in several ways during the Lansing stop on the American Discovery 250 Relay in October. The relay, which officially launched on July 1, 2026, is coming through Lansing on Wednesday, October 14. The Heritage Class of 2027 has already composed and submitted essays that were entered in the America 250 Relay Essay Contest sponsored by the American Trail Society. Lansing will be one of the stops for this relay which spans a total of 6,800 miles from coast to coast. Heritage students in NJHS, Chorus, Band, and the Cross-Country team will all participate in the celebration on October 14. One student from Heritage will also be chosen to read their outstanding essay to the group who will gather to cheer on the relay runners.
The America 250 Relay was organized to salute the American ideals set forth by our Founding Fathers - those of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These freedoms are celebrated, especially this year, to honor America’s 250th anniversary. Trail walkers and riders can find joy in outdoor activities where they can experience the beauty of nature along with the benefits of exercise.
People who participate in the relay will carry batons that have the Declaration of Independence inscribed on them. They are traveling on the trail by running, by bicycling, by wheelchair, and even on horseback. Participants are demonstrating their patriotism and their unity with one another by honoring America in this way.
Many Heritage students will be cheering on the American Discovery 250 Relay participants on Wednesday, October 14 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Please come out to share in the celebration and show support for our Heritage essay winner, along with our Chorus, Band and Cross-Country members.
