Time to Take the 5Essentials Survey

If you have not yet filled out the 5Essentials Survey, now is your chance. This is an annual survey that helps us grow as a District. It provides valuable feedback on how we are doing and what we can do to improve. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. The survey is available in both English and Spanish. Also, an important thing to note is this survey is school-specific, not district-specific. So if you have children at both Nathan Hale and Heritage, we ask that you fill out the survey twice - once for each building. Thank you.

Nathan Hale Updates:

Pre-K Keeping Their Teeth Clean

This week our Pre-K students were learning about Dental Hygiene and the tooth-brushing steps to celebrate Dental Health Month. Some of our fun activities were brushing germs and cavities (dry erase marker) off our "teeth" which were white Legos and white ice trays. We also worked on flossing, using Play-Doh as plaque and pipe cleaners as the floss. Students were involved in a sorting activity that focused on healthy vs. unhealthy food items we eat that can affect our teeth. The kiddos had so much with this and were very passionate about their learning!

Mrs. Lee's kindergarten class was completely engaged when they played the alphabet game after hearing the book Chicka Chick Boom Boom read to them. They kept chanting, "Read it again! Read it again!"

NHS Rocked WIDA

Nathan Hale students ROCKED the WIDA! They worked so hard on all four domains of their test and they are truly superstars for all their efforts! We are so proud of them!

Heritage Updates:

5th Graders Went to the Stars

Have you ever seen the night sky without city lights? Our 5th graders just did — at the Adler Planetarium! ✨ They experienced Skywatch Live to view constellations, stars, and the moon as they appear above Chicago. They also explored exhibits like "Mission Moon", "The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time". and "Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass". They topped off their experiences by crafting glow‑in‑the‑dark constellation necklaces. This experience sparked scientific curiosity, and they returned to Heritage a little wiser about our world and the universe.

Young, Gifted, and Black: Dreams for the Future

Last Thursday, our students proudly took center stage for our annual Black Heritage Program, themed “Young, Gifted, and Black: Dreams for the Future.” The evening was a powerful celebration of student talent, purpose, and pride, and our school community showed up in full support.

Students presented an inspiring program that highlighted their voices, vision, and leadership. Our Chorus and our Dancing Dolls brought energy, excellence, and artistry to the celebration. They delivered two unforgettable performances, singing and dancing to “I Can” by Nas and “Optimistic” by Sounds of Blackness. Both performances captured our ongoing spirit of confidence, resilience, and hope.

In addition to the chorus performances, students also shared solo vocal performances and powerful spoken word pieces that celebrated identity, culture, and purpose. One of the most meaningful moments of the night was our Dream Speaker Segment, where students spoke about their future goals, who inspired them, and the steps they are taking now to reach their dreams. Each speaker concluded with a powerful affirmation:

“I am young, gifted, and Black, and I will…”

Behind the scenes, the program was strengthened by our student leaders as well. Dedicated student tech and stage crews worked to keep the production running smoothly by keeping the sounds, transitions, and stage setups flowing. This helped bring the entire celebration together with teamwork and professionalism.

The Black Heritage Program Committee was proudly co-chaired by Dr. Hoskin and Ms. Smith and supported by Mrs. Peel, Ms. Hodo, Mr. Shed, Mr. Black, and Mr. Peebles. Their collaboration and commitment made this amazing celebration possible and ensured students had a platform to shine.

This program reminded us that Black history is not only about honoring the past but also about investing in the brilliance of the next generation. We are grateful to every student, staff member, and family who helped make the evening such a success.

Amamihe House Day: A Soaring Success

What an incredible day for Amamihe House! On Wednesday, February 11, our Amamihe students came together for a fantastic House Day filled with friendly competition, teamwork, and House spirit. It was truly a sight to behold! Amamihe students showed incredible spirit and creativity by making Valentine's Day cards for seniors at a local nursing home. BRIA of River Oaks staff were so grateful for the cards, and they were given to bedbound residents at the facility's Valentine's Day party. The day continued with fun and active games in the gym, followed by a sweet break where everyone enjoyed delicious cookies and yummy hot cocoa. The celebration culminated in an AMAZING talent show, highlighting the diverse talents our students possess.

HMS Student Council Builds Leadership at Winter Workshop

On Friday, February 13, 29 Student Council delegates and 3 advisors gathered at Grissom Middle School for a winter workshop focused on leadership and teamwork.

Throughout the event, students participated in engaging leadership activities designed to strengthen communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Delegates also took part in collaborative discussions where they shared ideas, reflected on their goals, and planned ways to make a positive impact in their schools and communities.

The workshop provided a meaningful opportunity for students to grow as leaders, build connections with peers, and return to their schools energized to serve and lead.

HMS EL Students were Activated

Our HMS EL and Bilingual students recently celebrated finishing the WIDA ACCESS test with a field trip to Activate in Oak Brook! This trip was a special reward for their hard work, growth, and perseverance. Students worked together to solve challenges, showed off their teamwork and communication skills, and most importantly, had so much fun! We are so proud of our multilingual learners and all they accomplished this year. Way to go, HMS EL/Bilingual!
