Nathan Hale Updates:

Nathan Hale Student Council

The Nathan Hale Student Council has 47 fourth graders who joined this year! Members have already started working on some great fundraisers, creating bulletin boards, assembling a hallway safety patrol, being on the morning announcements, and helping students shop at the Patriot Store! We are looking forward to a great year with these amazing student leaders!

Fire Safety

We are so grateful for our partnership with the Lansing Fire Department and Nathan Hale school. Our students had a special visit today as they learned about fire safety, why it is important to have an escape plan, what smoke alarms sound like, and what firemen look like when they're fully dressed in uniform. All Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students were able to learn valuable lifesaving information. Also, Nathan Hale had two winners from the Lansing Fire Department's coloring contest. Payton Harris (4th grade) and Yazmin Romero (3rd grade) received prizes at the Fire Department's Open House this past weekend. Thank you to all who participated!

NHS STEAM Update

STEAM students are learning to tinker and build at all grade levels. This creative environment fosters critical skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration through hands-on creation and experimentation. Look at those smiles!

NHS Soccer Club

Nathan Hale's Third Grade Soccer Club wrapped up this week! We had 26 students who learned the components of the game and got to play in some scrimmage games, too! We had a lot of fun and great weather for a fall season!

Heritage Updates:

Eagle Bucks Store Takes Flight at Heritage Middle School

Heritage Middle School launched its Eagle Bucks Store on October 10, giving students a fun and meaningful way to be rewarded for their hard work and positive choices. The program is part of the school’s PBIS initiative, which encourages students to demonstrate respect, responsibility, and engagement throughout the school day.

Students earn Eagle Bucks from teachers and staff for showing positive behavior, participating in extracurricular activities, making the honor roll, and demonstrating academic growth. They deposit their earnings in their Heritage House mailbox in the cafeteria and can then use their accounts to purchase prizes, snacks, or special incentives at the Eagle Bucks Store.

The store’s opening day was a huge success — students spent over 1,800 Eagle Bucks in total, with fifth graders leading the way at 895 Eagle Bucks spent. The excitement and high participation showed how much students value the recognition of their efforts.
The Eagle Bucks Store will be open every Friday, giving students a weekly opportunity to turn their positive actions into real rewards. This initiative not only reinforces positive behavior but also builds a strong sense of community and school pride at Heritage.

Grade 5 Students Welcome the Mayor of Lynwood to Heritage Middle School

Lynwood, IL Mayor Jada Curry and Board of Trustee member David Lilly were invited to share with the Grade 5 students their roles and responsibilities. Grade 5 Social Studies is studying State Standard SS.5.CV.1, the three levels of government, and invited the Mayor and Trustee member to share on their roles and responsibilities in Lynwood government. These two individuals have both served on the School Board for Sunnybrook District 171. Principal Cambric taught Mayor Curry’s son when he was in fifth Grade. Mayor Curry is the first African-American female mayor of Lynwood.

Grade 5 students asked great questions:
How is the government shutdown affecting Lynwood?
How is Lynwood helping Hispanics deal with ICE?
Is it fun being a mayor? Being a trustee member?
How much money do you make?
What is your favorite thing about being mayor? What is your favorite thing about being a trustee member?
Why did you want to be mayor? Why did you want to be a trustee member?

Mayor Curry was made an honorary member of the House of Valentina. Trustee Lilly was made an honorary member of the House of Dosti.

Project Based Learning Trip to the Federal Reserve Museum

The seventh and eighth grades Project Based Learning classes went to the Federal Reserve Museum in Downtown Chicago on Tuesday, October 14. The students learned about the role of the Federal Reserve bank and other aspects about money, finance, and investing.

Students also had an opportunity to explore Chicago. They saw Cloud Gate and had lunch in Maggie Daley Park. The weather was perfect for walking in and experiencing the city!
