Welcome Back!

Welcome back to another great school year! We have so much in store for your students this coming year. In the Sunnybrook Scoop, you will learn all about what is to come and about the celebrations for events that have taken place in our district. We will be sending out a new Scoop every other Monday, so please keep an eye out as this is a great resource to find out is happening in the district and at Nathan Hale and Heritage.

Visitor System Update

Over the summer, we upgraded our visitor management system to make our buildings more secure and help expedite student movement. When you visit either building, there is now a self-service kiosk you can use to expedite the check-in or check-out of your children. The most important thing to remember for this change is that you must bring in your original driver's license or state ID to be able to verify your identity and use the kiosk.

When you enter, you will scan your ID on the kiosk. The next step is to take a current picture. The program will then ask for your reason for visiting. If you are picking up or dropping off your child(ren), you will need to enter their name(s). Once all this is done, our front desk will have the information they need to either give you a visitor's pass or contact your child. It is critical that you keep your contacts updated in PowerSchool as to who can pick up your child. If someone comes in to pick up your child and they are not listed in PowerSchool, the visitor system will immediately text you with the number on file to let you know who is trying to pick up your child and ask for you to grant permission or not. Our office is also alerted that the person who is here is not listed as an approved contact. So to make sure the pick up process is quick and easy, please keep your contacts up to date.

The front office will be there to help you through this change as everyone gets use to it and as assistance is needed.

Another Back to School Bonanza in the Books

On Monday, August 18th, we had another great Back to School Bonanza. Due to the heat and the predicted weather, we did move inside, but that did not stop people from coming out and enjoying the great event. We gave out hundreds of backpacks, boxes of school supplies, hot dogs, and bags of popcorn. We had a DJ rocking the house and free hair cuts for our students. We were joined by members of the Sunnybrook School Board, the Lansing and Lynwood first responders, the Lansing and Lynwood libraries, Lan-Oak Park District, our PTA, and the Dental Bus. We had so much going on, and the students had a blast to kick off another great school year.

Preschool Adventure Begins

The first week of Preschool has started with a bang. Our littles have explored our classroom and met their new friends and teachers. We are already having so much fun, and we cannot wait to see what this year brings!

First Week Reading Connects with Learning

Classes this week read a different book and completed projects around these stories. Ms. Pellot's first graders read "Our Class is Family" and made class bracelets together to represent their unity as a class family. They had so much fun and got to take their bracelets home to remember their first week in first grade. They also made an anchor chart and talked about how they can make their room feel like a family! It is going to be a great year!
After Mrs. Gonzalez's class read "First Day Jitters", students graphed how we were feeling and ended our activity with "Jitter Juice" to help our jitters go away!
Ms. Percic’s first graders took the time to learn carpet time expectations and then listened to a retelling of the story "The Recess Queen". They then worked together to talk about what it means to be a good friend at recess.
Lastly, Ms. Heins' kindergarten class made Jitter Juice and read the story "First Day Jitters". They followed it up with some dancing and movement activities to help shake off those first-day nerves. At their tables, they spent time getting to know one another and beginning to build new friendships. They also practiced working together and sharing materials as we learned how to be part of a classroom community.

First Week Fun

Mrs. Lee's class has been busy getting to know each other by sharing family portraits during morning group time, enjoying outdoor gross motor play, and exploring in centers using magnets to learn to spell their names!
Ms. Contino’s 2nd grade class completed “Find a friend who…” activity. Students had the opportunity to find out more about their classmates such as who has pets, who has siblings, activities they enjoy doing, and other topics. Students discovered that they have a lot of things in common with many of their classmates!

Learning to Stay Safe in STEM Class

STEAM students have been learning how to stay safe on their devices and will continue for another week. One of the safety topics include how to handle digital meanness, cyberbullying, and uncomfortable pop-ups and websites and gives students the STOP acronym as a tool to remember:

  • Step away
  • Tell a trusted adult
  • Ok sites first
  • Pause and think online
Ask your student about it and see what they know.
