Welcome to 1st Grade!

About Me:

My name is Janet Shimala, and I am very excited to be your child's first grade teacher. This is my 10th year teaching at Nathan Hale. I grew up in Glenwood and went to Bloom High School. I attended Northern Illinois University for my bachelor's degree and later National-Louis University where I received my master's degree.

I have two great kids at home--Emily, 9 and Charlie, 6!

I have many interests including spending time with family, reading, traveling, playing with my new cavachon pup, Sam, and of course, teaching!

Our Classroom:

Flexible Seating

In our classroom we have flexible seating. What is flexible seating? It is a student centered learning environment where students will choose a working spot that allows them to do their best work. We have a variety of seats to choose from including stools, chairs, cushions, desks, and mats. Students must always use them appropriately. If a spot isn't working they may move so that they can be successful.

Community Supplies

In our classroom we have some community supplies, which means all students will share pencils, crayons, markers, and erasers. Scissors and glue can be kept with each student in their pouch.
