AVID/STEM/Gifted Coordinator

I am Sarah Henderson-Washington and I am the STEM, AVID, and Gifted Coordinator for Sunnybrook School District 171. This is my first year with the district and I am excited to be a part of such an awesome educational environment. While this is my first year in this district, it is not my first year in education. I have been an educator in Illinois since 2002. My teaching philosophy lends itself to the idea that "It Matters". By that I mean, it matters that my students get what they need to help them to be successful in their endeavors now as well as in the future. This is why the programs that I coordinate are so important; they help me achieve that goal.

My Programs:

AVID
AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) is a program where students engage in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to prepare for their future success. This program helps our students be college and career ready beginning at a young age. Currently, we are focusing our efforts on the students at Heritage Middle School. However, we are moving toward including the students at Nathan Hale, our elementary school as we move toward a school-wide AVID model.

STEM
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math have become such an integral part of our daily life that it is imperative that students are well versed in its components. Our plan this year is to provide opportunities for students in K-8 to participate in STEM related activities that will give them the chance to engage in all of the elements of STEM on a monthly basis.

Gifted (and Talented)
Our Gifted and Talented program is truly in the infancy stages. We are developing a program that will be suited to those students who need a little extra to support to reach their full potential as many of them operate above grade level. We are hoping to offer opportunities to students that allow them to compete with their gifted and talented peers on local, state, and national levels. We also plan to allow times during the year for students to showcase their skills to fellow classmates and the community at large.

Be on the look-out for exciting activities and experiences from the talented students of Sunnybrook School District 171.
